"Somewhere Over

Seattle Men’s Chorus
30th Anniversary Commemorative Painting

by Scott Ward

Artist Statement

I was honored when asked to paint a commemorative piece celebrating SMC’s 30th Anniversary. My relationship with Seattle Men’s Chorus began in 1989. I had just moved to Seattle from Minneapolis and immediately became involved with the Chorus. Initially, I was the costume designer for one quarter. I then became a singing member and sang for six years. Since that time I have been an audience member, a volunteer, a supporter, and poster artist. The Chorus is more than a place to make beautiful and entertaining music. It is a family, a support, an outstretched arm, a voice for unity.

When I thought about the Chorus, its mission and its journey I saw a tree, this tree with 30 branches reaching for the sky. Ever growing and strong, it has far reaching roots as its solid foundation. Its many individual leaves represent the many men (and women) who have stood on the risers and behind the scenes. Musical notes and symbols float among the leaves.

What began as Emerald City Arts is now Flying House Productions. On the horizon I’ve placed our Emerald City. In the sky, in the tree, is the flying house.

The blue birds are the heart and soul, the wings of the Chorus. There is an imaginary treble clef that runs through the painting. And if the birds were notes, they would “sing” the lyric “Somewhere over the rainbow….”

In typical fashion I have hidden words in the piece. Those are for you to discover.
