Development Manager
ORGANIZATION:
Flying House Productions (FHP), parent organization for Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle’s Chorus, was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation
in the State of Washington in 1982. FHP’s purpose is three-fold: to perform choral music for the general public at the highest possible levels of professionalism,
to promote positive social change in support of LGBT causes, and to provide its members with a welcoming, nurturing community in which to pursue their artistry.
FHP enriches the cultural life of the greater Seattle area and beyond, builds bridges of understanding between diverse communities, and fosters in its members
and audiences the unity and joy experienced through the common language of music. Together, Seattle Men’s Chorus & Seattle Women’s Chorus comprise
the third largest musical performing organization in the state of Washington in terms of budget and audience, the largest community chorus in the United States,
and the largest gay-identified chorus in the world.
Position Summary
The Development Manager (DM) is responsible for the management and implementation of Flying House Productions’ (FHP) fundraising activities,
with the exception of the major gifts program.
The DM is part of a fund development team that also includes a Major Gifts Officer, a Development Associate/Grants Manager, members of the Board of Directors,
a development intern and volunteers, with an annual fundraising goal from all sources of approximately $1,400,000.
The DM reports directly to the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
Individual Fundraising
- Plans and executes direct mail, telefunding, social media, and member donor campaigns, seeking to build enduring donor relationships both inside and outside the FHP community.
- Supports the Major Gifts Officer in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and maintenance of prospective major donors, including support of the planned giving program.
- Researches, develops and implements plan for enlisting individuals as potential season, concert, and/or special project sponsors.
- Devises and executes an effective and consistent donor recognition program, including donor thank you events.
Special Event Fundraising
- Collaborates with the Executive Director, Board, and development team in the planning of all special fundraising events and activities.
- Coordinates and carries out all aspects of FHP’s special fundraising events and activities, including event planning, guest development, auction procurement, and raffle administration.
- Oversees all in-kind gift activities, including solicitation, valuation and acknowledgment.
Corporate, Foundation and Government Fundraising
- Supervises and assists the Development Associate/Grants Manager in the research, development, and pursuit of potential grants.
- Supervises and assists staff in the research, development, and implementation of plans for enlisting businesses and corporations as potential season, concert, and/or special project sponsors.
Strategy
- Works with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and rest of the development team to establish annual fundraising goals, strategies, and action plans.
- Collaborates with this same group to identify and cultivate sources of new funding from inside and outside the FHP community.
Administration and Collaboration
- Ensures the effective processing, acknowledgement, tracking and reporting of all donor activity.
- Develops and maintains a comprehensive fund development calendar and task list.
- Provides regular updates to the Executive Director and Board, tracking progress and projections versus goals.
- Contributes to the generation of articles, letters, emails, speeches, and other communications sharing details of FHP’s fund development needs and activities.
- Networks within the greater community, attending events and representing FHP.
- Contributes to the preparation of annual budgets.
- Participates in weekly staff and senior manager meetings; attends regular Board and committee meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of increasing responsibility within a broad-based non-profit fund development environment, covering all facets of fundraising, including direct mail, telefunding, and social media campaigns, special fundraising and donor recognition events, and corporate and individual sponsorship programs
- Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in relevant field preferred
- Commitment to Flying House Production’s mission and values
- Demonstrated success with organizing, prioritizing, detail-tracking and follow-through in a multi-project environment
- Leadership experience, with demonstrated success in staff motivation and management
- Technology experience and expertise, including knowledge of contact management and database systems; some knowledge/experience with fundraising database software and auction administration software desirable
- Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills; ability to motivate and influence others
- Excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking and presentation skills
- Maturity, diplomacy and common sense
- Warmth and humor
Conditions of Employment
- Position requires some evening and weekend work (concerts, meetings, donor solicitation, special events, etc.), in addition to regular work days.
- Travel, primarily locally, is required.
Compensation
- This is a full-time, exempt position.
- FHP employees currently receive subsidized medical, dental, vision and disability insurance benefits, paid vacation and sick leave.

Major Gifts Officer

The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) develops and executes long and short-term strategies to secure major and planned gifts ($1,000 or more) in support of
Flying House Production’s (FHP’s) mission. The MGO position revolves around regular and frequent contact with existing and potential major donors,
both individually and via the implementation of major donor campaigns and events. The MGO is also responsible for the growth and management of FHP’s planned
giving program. The MGO is part of a fund development team that includes a Development Manager, a Development Associate/Grants Manager, members of the Board of Directors,
a development intern and volunteers, with an annual fundraising goal from all sources of approximately $1,400,000. The MGO reports directly to the Executive Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with the Executive Director to develop short- and long-term major donor strategies for broadening and deepening giving at the major donor level;
- Implements all major gift campaigns and activities;
- Builds and sustains a successful stewardship program through which existing major donors are engaged in the life of the organization, building loyalty and deepening connections, resulting in increasing satisfaction and retention;
- Engages, trains, and coordinates Board and senior staff members’ involvement in the cultivation and stewardship of major donors; works with the relevant Board committee to build and sustain a strong volunteer network to multiply efforts in prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation as well as to provide expanded opportunities for key prospects to engage with FHP leaders and one another;
- Partners with the Development Manager to plan and execute special events involving major donors;
- Networks within the greater community on behalf of FHP;
- Develops and maintain a comprehensive campaign and activity calendar and task list;
- Provides regular updates on activities to the Executive Director and Board, tracking both effort and progress/projections versus goals;
- Prepares articles, letters, emails, speeches, and other communications sharing details of FHP’s major donor and planned giving needs and activities;
- Contributes to the preparation of annual budgets;
- Participates in selected staff, Board and committee meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of non-profit fund development experience, with specific experience and solid track record in major gifts;
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience;
- Commitment to Flying House Productions’ mission and values;
- Experience working with Board/volunteer committees;
- Sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophies of charitable giving;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse array of personalities under pressure and deadlines;
- Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills; ability to motivate and influence others;
- Excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking and presentation skills;
- Maturity, diplomacy and common sense;
- Warmth and humor.

Compensation
- This is a 3/5 time, salaried, non-exempt position.
