Over 10 years ago, the Choruses came together when they discovered they had a positive impact on local children and their families, and established the kids-friendly choral concert. Not only has the experience of seeing a Chorus production stimulated a constructive space for families to interact and enjoy a performance together, it also has given kids of all ages an opportunity to experience the arts on a level that engages and resonates.
In 2010, the Choruses and Village Theatre’s KIDSTAGE connected after seeing a similarity in their overall missions. The Choruses aim to use “the power of words and music to recognize the value of gay and straight people and their relationships” while KIDSTAGE works to cultivate a performing arts experience for youth that has the power to transform them by offering “skills for theatre, skills for life.” This like-mindedness proved to be an ideal match, and thus the latest incarnation of the Kid’s Concert was born.
“Three years ago we invited KIDSTAGE to be part of this annual concert. It seemed to be a great opportunity to allow the youth in the audience to ‘see themselves’ on stage by seeing the young people from KIDSTAGE performing,” said the Choruses marketing director Frank Stilwagner. “It is also a great experience for the kids involved to have the opportunity to perform at McCaw Hall in front of 2,000 plus people.”
The annual concert has grown from KIDSTAGE performing a few small numbers from past productions alongside the singers in Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus, to now including instrumentalists, dance numbers, and this year, Village Theatre KIDSTAGE in Everett will join the youth from the Issaquah program, creating quite the spectacle.
“For the kids involved it means coming prepared to McCaw with their repertoire memorized,” said KIDSTAGE music director Nathan Young. “For some, this means re-memorizing a show that may have closed months earlier. They then get a chance to rehearse at McCaw, review choreography and re-space before going into a sound check on stage. For many of these youth, this is the largest venue they have ever performed in and the awe is evident in their faces the first time they take the stage.”
Special Guest
Since 1988, KIDSTAGE has “used theatre to foster life skills in children aged 4-20,” said Kati Nickerson, director of youth education for Village Theatre. In classes and rehearsals, the kids cultivate their creative talent and learn flexibility and improvisation in ways that “increase self-confidence and improve their futures” whether or not they are on a path to Broadway.
“We provide a safe space for a diverse array of kids, and importantly we take kids outside of their comfort zone to give them opportunities to stretch, grow, and mature into young adults, All of us at KIDSTAGE are excited to showcase our kids’ talent in an on-stage partnership with the men and women of the Choruses.” - Kati Nickerson
